Job Summary Position Overview:
Huntington Beach High School and the Academy for the Performing Arts (APA) is seeking a passionate and experienced Dance Teacher to join our dance faculty. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in both commercial and concert dance, with the ability to instruct students from beginning to advanced levels. This teacher will be responsible for providing rigorous technical training, choreographing competitive-level pieces for school performances, and fostering an inclusive environment for all students, including those with disabilities in our co-taught Unified Arts Dance class.
Key Responsibilities:
-Teach dance technique classes ranging from beginning to advanced levels in various styles, including but not limited to ballet, jazz, contemporary, hip-hop, and commercial dance.
-Develop and implement engaging lesson plans that support student growth in technical proficiency, artistic expression, and performance skills.
-Choreograph for school productions, showcases, and competitive performances.
-Collaborate with faculty, staff, and guest artists to enhance the APA dance program.
-Support and mentor students in their artistic and personal development.
-Work with students with disabilities in a co-taught Unified Arts Dance class, ensuring an inclusive and supportive learning environment.
-Maintain high artistic and professional standards while fostering a positive and respectful classroom culture.
Qualifications:
-Bachelor's degree in Dance, Performing Arts, or a related field (Master's preferred).
-Professional experience in both commercial and concert dance.
-Prior teaching experience in a school, studio, or professional setting.
-Strong choreographic skills and experience creating competitive-level pieces.
-Experience working with diverse student populations, including students with disabilities.
-Ability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and community partners.

Required: A valid California teaching credential authorizing service at the secondary level in the subject areas assigned.
Desirable: Personal qualities which will enable an individual to manage his/her required duties and which will result in an effective rapport with students. Sincere interest in young people and a desire to guide and encourage their education.

GENERAL RESPONSIBILITIES
The teacher is directly responsible to the school principal, or designate, or to the designated administrator if the teaching assignment is not in a school. The teacher has the responsibility, as part of a high school teaching assignment, to guide and facilitate the learning experience of students in accordance with established educational goals of the district. In addition, the teacher shares with other staff responsibility for the safety and welfare of students and staff members.
MAJOR DUTIES
Provides instruction in areas of knowledge and skills in assigned subject area, utilizing the adopted courses of study, and affective learning, including but not limited to interests, attitudes, appreciations, and values. E
Utilizes the appropriate instructional techniques, activities and materials which will adapt the curriculum to the needs of pupils and be consistent with departmental, school and district goals.E
Communicates with parents, peers and school counselors on the individual pupil's progress. E
Advises students and provides personal support of students. E
Cooperates with other professional staff members in assessing and helping pupils solve health, attitude, and learning problems. E
Establishes and maintains standards necessary to preserve a suitable learning environment. E
Performs basic student attendance accounting, textbook accounting, and business services as required by staff rules or established local procedures.
ADJUNCT DUTIES
Participates in and supports the total school program in such ways as the following:
a. Acts as a resource person on an interdepartmental level to relate appropriate aspects to other subject areas.
b. Participates in curriculum and other developmental programs within the school of assignment and/or on a district level.
c. Participates in community-school functions.
d. Attends such meetings, workshops, and in-service activities as may be officially required by the department, school, or district and which are conducted during regular work hours and/or during the normal operating hours of the school.
Shares responsibility for care and protection of facilities, equipment and materials to the extent that it does not interfere with the classroom assignment.
Maintains professional competence through participation in in-service education activities provided by the district and/or in self-selected professional growth activities.
Fulfills assigned co-curricular responsibilities, such as supervision of student social and athletic activities.
WORKING CONDITIONS
Environment:
Classroom environment; subject to intermittent noise.
Physical Abilities:
Hearing and speaking to exchange information and make presentations, sitting or standing for extended periods of time, reaching overhead, above the shoulders and horizontally, bending at the waist, and seeing to read and explain classroom assignments.
